China and Uruguay Elevate Strategic Partnership

In a landmark meeting in Montevideo, Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang and Uruguayan President Yamandu Orsi agreed to deepen the China-Uruguay comprehensive strategic partnership under the guidance of their heads of state.

Marking 37 years since diplomatic ties were first established, Ding conveyed President Xi Jinping’s greetings and highlighted the pair’s mutual respect and equality across political, cultural and economic exchanges. He noted that recent recommendations from the 20th Central Committee’s fourth plenary session—part of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan—offer fresh opportunities for bilateral collaboration.

Key sectors set for expansion include economy and trade, finance, agriculture, animal husbandry and infrastructure, anchored by high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. The leaders also pledged to fast-track new growth areas in information and communications, artificial intelligence and the digital economy.

People-to-people exchanges will receive a boost as both sides look to foster deeper cultural, educational, sports and youth ties. Ding underscored support for multilateralism through initiatives like the Global Development, Global Security and Global Governance programs, aiming to reinforce international fairness and justice.

President Orsi reiterated Uruguay’s commitment to a free, open international trading system and welcomed President Xi’s global proposals. Following their talks, the two sides signed agreements on economic, technological and customs cooperation, setting the stage for the next chapter in China-Uruguay relations.
