Doha, Tuesday – At the Second World Summit for Social Development, held nearly 30 years after the landmark 1995 Copenhagen meeting, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng laid out a dynamic four-point roadmap to advance social progress worldwide.
Reflecting on three decades since the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and its Program of Action, Han highlighted China’s people-centered approach that eradicated extreme poverty 10 years ahead of the United Nations 2030 Agenda deadline. He noted that this people-first model helped build the world’s largest education, healthcare and social security systems while sharing development experience with partners worldwide.
Han’s four-point proposal includes:
- People-oriented Principle: Prioritize well-being by meeting urgent needs in developing countries to deliver real gains, security and happiness.
- Shared Development Goals: Fully implement the UN 2030 Agenda to foster high-quality employment and ensure everyone can achieve personal growth through hard work.
- Universal Benefit and Inclusiveness: Create a fair environment by balancing resource distribution, improving public services, and empowering the elderly, persons with disabilities, women, children and youth.
- Solidarity and Cooperation: Practice true multilateralism, support the United Nations’ coordinating role, and elevate the voice of developing countries in shaping a fair global order.
Looking ahead, Han underscored the need for a global governance model based on extensive consultation and shared benefits. With more than 30 heads of state and over 100 ministerial-level representatives in Doha, the summit offers a pivotal moment to accelerate the implementation of the Copenhagen agenda and inject fresh momentum into building a community with a shared future for humanity.
