Khamenei Says Iran-US Dispute is Fundamental, Not Tactical

In a candid address to students in Tehran ahead of Student Day, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei emphasized that the country's decades‐long dispute with the United States is driven by deep‐seated differences rather than temporary tactics.

Student Day, which marks the 1979 takeover of the U.S. embassy, exposed Washington's true identity, Khamenei said, pointing to documents seized during the crisis as proof that the embassy was a center for plotting against Iran's Islamic Revolution.

While recent statements from Washington have signaled a willingness to cooperate on regional issues, Khamenei argued these overtures conflict with continued U.S. support for Israel. He said true cooperation can only begin when the United States ends its support for Israel, withdraws its forces from the region and stops interfering in Iran's affairs.

His remarks underscore a broader ideological clash that has shaped Middle East geopolitics for decades. By framing the disagreement as fundamental, Khamenei laid out clear preconditions for any meaningful dialogue with the West.

As young global citizens watch these developments, the questions raised at this year's Student Day resonate far beyond Tehran, highlighting how historical grievances and strategic interests continue to redefine international relations.
