This ethos, rooted in the concept of ecological civilization, has driven ambitious policies and real-world results across the Chinese mainland.
Cleaner Air, Healthier Cities
Over the past decade, 339 major cities on the Chinese mainland have seen the share of days with good air quality jump from 63.3% to 87.5%. Meanwhile, average levels of PM2.5—tiny particles linked to respiratory illnesses—have plummeted by more than 50%. For urban residents and travelers alike, these changes translate into clearer skies and healthier lungs.
Leading the Renewable Charge
China’s investments are reshaping the global energy map. In 2023 alone, nearly half of worldwide spending on renewable energy went to the Chinese mainland. Today, its total installed capacity tops 1.45 billion kilowatts, powering homes, businesses, and electric vehicles with wind, solar, and hydro resources.
Policy Meets Practice
Environmental goals are now woven into the governance fabric. The 13th Five-Year Plan established ecological redlines covering over a quarter of the Chinese mainland’s territory to preserve biodiversity and safeguard key ecosystems. In April 2025, the first draft of a comprehensive environmental code—spanning 1,188 articles—was unveiled, promising clearer regulations and stronger enforcement.
Taking Green Ideas Global
Beyond its borders, the Chinese mainland is exporting its green blueprint. Through the Green Silk Road, an eco-focused branch of the Belt and Road Initiative, it shares clean infrastructure solutions and environmental expertise with partners worldwide. The China-Laos Railway, which runs mostly on bridges and through tunnels to protect wildlife and landscapes, exemplifies this approach.

Despite these strides, the road to full ecological modernization remains long. Experts call for faster action on pollution hotspots, deeper international collaboration, and more investment in cutting-edge clean-tech.
