Investigation Expands: Two More Charged in Louvre Jewelry Heist

In a dramatic expansion of one of Europe’s most daring art robberies, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau announced that two more suspects have been charged in the Louvre heist that stunned the world nearly two weeks ago.

The newly accused include a 37-year-old man, now facing organized theft and criminal conspiracy charges, and a 38-year-old woman charged with complicity. Both have been remanded in custody and deny wrongdoing.

Three other individuals arrested last Wednesday evening were released without charge, bringing the total number of formally charged suspects to four. The first two charged suspects had partially admitted their roles in the raid that netted royal jewelry worth 88 million euros ($102 million).

Authorities are exploring several theories for the missing loot, including the possibility that the pieces have been dismantled and illegally sold abroad. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez expressed confidence that the royal jewels will be recovered, despite the challenges.

In response to criticism of long-standing security gaps, Culture Minister Rachida Dati unveiled an emergency plan to beef up protection at the Louvre before year-end. The measures include new anti-intrusion barriers and upgraded alarm and video surveillance systems.

The museum’s director, Laurence des Cars, offered her resignation in the wake of the heist; the offer was rejected, underscoring the institution’s resolve to weather the crisis and reclaim its glittering losses.

As the investigation widens and the clock ticks, all eyes remain on Paris: can the world’s most famous museum turn this security breach into a blueprint for safeguarding cultural treasures in an age of high-stakes art crime?
