Russia has publicly rebuked the United States over what it calls an “excessive” use of military force in the Caribbean, shining a spotlight on rising geopolitical tensions in a region more often associated with sun, surf and counter-narcotics patrols.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Saturday that such actions violate both U.S. domestic and international law, a position she said is shared by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker TĂĽrk.
“We reaffirm our firm support for the Venezuelan leadership in its efforts to defend national sovereignty,” said Zakharova. “We advocate for preserving the Latin American and Caribbean region as a zone of peace,” she added.
The exchange underscores a larger debate over security, sovereignty and influence in the Caribbean. Experts warn that continued friction between global powers could ripple into trade, tourism and diplomatic ties across the region.
Zakharova urged steps to de-escalate the situation and pursue constructive solutions under international law, reaffirming Russia’s call for the Caribbean to remain a true zone of peace.
