China is considering export exemptions for critical automotive chips made by Nexperia, a key supplier to global carmakers. The move aims to ease supply chain pressures after what the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) described as improper interference by the Dutch government in corporate affairs.
In a Saturday statement, a MOFCOM spokesperson stressed, "As a responsible major country, China fully takes into account the safety and stability of both domestic and international supply chains." Companies facing difficulties are encouraged to reach out to the ministry or local commerce authorities for support.
The ministry said it will thoroughly assess affected businesses and may grant exemptions for eligible chip exports, a step that could help automakers navigate a tight market for semiconductors.
Earlier this month, the China Semiconductor Industry Association opposed the Dutch intervention in Nexperia, the automotive chip unit of Chinese firm Wingtech. MOFCOM criticized the Netherlands for overstretching national security concepts and directly meddling in internal corporate matters.
Officials warned that such actions violate contract and market principles and could ultimately harm the Netherlands' own business environment. As chip demand surges worldwide, China's willingness to adjust export controls underscores the fight for a resilient supply chain and highlights the growing link between geopolitics and technology.
