Injecting New Momentum: China’s Push for Asia-Pacific Growth

Fresh from the 20th Central Committee’s fourth plenary session, President Xi Jinping is on the move. From October 30 to November 1, he’ll join Asia-Pacific leaders at the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and make a state visit to South Korea. Observers say his trip could inject stability and new momentum into regional growth as economies navigate trade tensions and digital transformation.

Opening Doors for Win-Win Partnerships

Take Peru’s Chancay Port: the continent’s first smart, green terminal now linking Latin America and Asia. When President Xi remotely joined its inauguration at the 31st APEC meeting, he underlined APEC’s role as an “incubator of global economic and trade rules.” Over the first three quarters of 2025, trade between China and other APEC economies climbed 2 percent to 19.41 trillion yuan ($2.73 trillion), proving that open markets still power shared prosperity.

Innovation at the Heart of Growth

At the 2023 APEC CEO Summit, Xi urged nations to “seize the opportunities of the new technological revolution.” This call resonates: at the China–ASEAN Expo, 62 cutting-edge projects in AI, new energy, and advanced materials were signed, many focusing on joint R&D. In Chile, Chinese-made electric double-decker buses kept the Pan American Games running on clean power—a vivid example of green tech in action.

Building Inclusive Prosperity

China-supported projects are also touching lives on the ground. In Papua New Guinea, a new rice and Juncao grass demonstration center is boosting food security and sustainable livelihoods. From APEC initiatives promoting household incomes to the Global Development Initiative’s push on poverty reduction and food security, Xi’s agenda stresses inclusive growth across the Asia-Pacific.

As President Xi heads to APEC, his message is clear: by championing openness, innovation, and shared development, Asia-Pacific economies can weather uncertainty and build a more prosperous future—together.
