China Opposes U.S. Arms Sales to the Taiwan Region

In Beijing on Wednesday, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, delivered a clear message: China firmly opposes U.S. arms sales to the Taiwan region.

Responding to media reports that U.S. arms deals to the Taiwan region could reach record highs next year, Zhu stressed that Beijing has "always, clearly and resolutely opposed U.S. arms sales to China’s Taiwan region." She warned that the Democratic Progressive Party authorities had diverted funds from livelihood projects on the island of Taiwan to curry favor with external forces—a move she said could bring serious consequences for residents of Taiwan.

Zhu reiterated that the Taiwan question is "purely China’s internal affair" and "brooks no external interference." She criticized some U.S. policymakers for treating Taiwan as a pawn in their broader political and economic agenda, and urged Washington to fully adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques.

As tensions over regional security and sovereignty continue, Zhu’s comments underscore Beijing’s call for respect of established frameworks in cross-strait ties. For young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders, this episode highlights how high-level diplomacy can ripple through technology, business partnerships, and sustainable travel in Asia and beyond.
