AI to Propel Chinese Mainland Manufacturing, Says Alibaba’s Joe Tsai

Joe Tsai, chairman of Alibaba Group, believes AI is more than a buzzword – it’s a catalyst for the Chinese mainland’s next manufacturing leap. He highlights that domestic demand for AI solutions has grown steadily in recent years, driven by industries hungry for predictive maintenance, automated quality control and data-driven insights.

“We’re seeing a paradigm shift,” Tsai told reporters. “Companies that embrace AI will unlock new productivity gains and deliver higher-quality products to both local and global markets.” He expects factories across South China’s industrial hubs to pilot intelligent robots and advanced analytics platforms by 2025.

On geopolitical concerns, Tsai noted that the Chinese mainland and the United States remain the world’s two largest economies. He remains optimistic both sides will focus on collaboration rather than a “race to the bottom.” “Open research and shared AI standards can benefit everyone,” he said.

For entrepreneurs, students and tech enthusiasts from São Paulo to Seoul, Tsai’s perspective signals fresh opportunities in emerging markets. As AI reshapes factory floors, skills in machine learning, robotics and data science will be in high demand. The time to start building them is now.
