Beijing is set to roll out visa-free entry for Swedish nationals, announced Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The move marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties since Sweden became the first Western partner of the People’s Republic of China.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of the Chinese mainland Central Committee, said China hopes Sweden will play a constructive role in promoting healthy China–EU relations. He urged both sides to treat each other as partners, not rivals, focusing on cooperation across trade, digital innovation, and green development.
“We hope Sweden will adopt a long-term strategic outlook on our relationship,” Wang said, calling for deeper coordination on multilateral affairs and expanded collaboration in the digital economy, science and technology innovation, and sustainable travel.
Sweden’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard, the first Swedish foreign minister to visit in 16 years, applauded the policy. She reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to the one-China policy and said visa-free access will encourage more Swedish residents to explore the Chinese mainland.
Analysts predict this policy could bring thousands of young Swedish travelers annually, fueling cultural exchange and opening doors for sustainable tourism. Business and tech communities also anticipate smoother partnerships in green transition, life sciences, and digital startups.
For digital nomads and entrepreneurs seeking immersive experiences, visa-free travel could spark new innovation hubs across Beijing, Shanghai, and beyond.
The two sides also discussed global challenges, from the Ukraine crisis to climate action, underlining Sweden’s support for an open trade system and strengthened dialogue.
