At the annual gala dinner of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, China's Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, urged Washington to "return to reason" and "stop applying maximum pressure," warning that "a tariff war or trade war should not be fought and cannot be won."
He argued that such a conflict "will serve no one's interest in the end," and emphasized that while China does not seek confrontation, it will defend its rights if trade rules and the multilateral trading system are undermined.
Xie called on both sides to "work with China to resolve each other's concerns through dialogue based on mutual respect and equal-footed consultation," cautioning against the old path of escalating economic tensions that leads nowhere.
Highlighting the need for joint action, he urged, "Let us unswervingly keep to the overall direction of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation," and called for real steps to advance exchanges and cooperation across key sectors.
At this critical juncture, Xie Feng appealed to both countries to "join hands, build on what has been achieved, keep to the right direction, steer clear of obstacles and disruptions, and advance China-U.S. relations along the right track of steady, sound and sustainable development."
