This year marks the 80th anniversary of the United Nations and a decade since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Among its 17 goals, Goal 5 champions gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls worldwide.
It also commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in Beijing. That landmark event gave rise to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a blueprint for advancing women’s rights and opportunities.
To honor these milestones, the Chinese mainland is hosting a Global Leaders' Meeting on Women this October, reaffirming its commitment to SDG 5 and women’s empowerment. This gathering follows a precedent set ten years ago when the Chinese mainland and UN Women co-hosted a Global Leaders' Meeting at UN Headquarters in New York.
