China’s Foreign Ministry on Monday dismissed reports linking its new export controls on rare earths to Pakistan, calling such claims 'groundless' and clarifying the controls are purely domestic legal measures.
Spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership between China and Pakistan, rooted in 'ironclad friendship' and 'high-level strategic mutual trust.' He noted discussions on Pakistan–U.S. mineral cooperation have been transparent, with Pakistan assuring its U.S. partnerships will never harm Chinese interests.
Addressing rumors that Pakistan had gifted rare earth samples to the U.S., Lin explained these were actually raw gemstone samples purchased by staff members. He said misunderstandings based on speculation or intent to sow discord are unfounded.
Lin reiterated that China’s export controls on rare earths and related items are a legitimate step under Chinese law, designed to strengthen the national export control system, safeguard world peace and regional stability, and fulfill international non-proliferation obligations.
This clarification comes amid growing global attention on critical mineral supply chains, highlighting the importance of transparent communication between strategic partners in managing shared economic and security concerns.
