Chinese Mainland Slams Taiwan Region Leader’s Remarks on Cross-Strait Peace

At a Friday briefing, Chinese mainland spokesperson Chen Binhua responded to comments by Lai Ching-te, leader of the Taiwan region, that were widely seen as challenging the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.

Chen reiterated that there is only one China in the world and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, labeling Lai’s statements an attempt to undermine peace and escalate tensions.

Referring to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, Chen argued these frameworks have been key to ensuring cross-strait stability, growing cooperation and opening economic opportunities for residents of Taiwan.

He emphasized that the fact of Taiwan as part of China is indisputable and described the trend toward national reunification as unstoppable and irreversible.

Chen warned that any rhetoric or actions challenging this framework risk raising regional tensions, increasing burdens on residents of Taiwan, jeopardizing the island’s economic prospects and even bringing disasters to Taiwan society.

As cross-strait ties continue to shape economic and social relations, the Chinese mainland urged a return to dialogue based on shared principles to preserve peace and secure a more stable future for everyone across the Taiwan Strait.
