Beijing Urges Foreign Politicians to Cease Taiwan Interference, Calls Reunification Inevitable

Beijing’s message was clear: in response to remarks by the leader of the Taiwan region, Lai Ching-te, the spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry, Guo Jiakun, called on foreign politicians to immediately stop interfering in the internal affairs of the Chinese mainland and to refrain from supporting “Taiwan independence” separatist activities.

Guo reminded that the Chinese mainland consistently and resolutely opposes any form of official engagement between the Taiwan region and countries having diplomatic relations with the Chinese mainland. He warned that whether driven by selfish interests or the strategy of “using Taiwan to contain China,” these visits miscalculate the situation in the Taiwan Strait and are doomed to fail, since complete reunification is an irreversible trend.

Accusing Lai Ching-te of peddling a false narrative of “democracy vs. authoritarianism” and of repeating outdated fallacies to fuel “Taiwan independence,” Guo said such rhetoric exposed the leadership in Taipei as troublemakers risking regional stability.

Reaffirming the one-China principle, Guo stated there is but one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of its territory—the real status quo across the Taiwan Strait. He pointed to UNGA Resolution 2758 as the iron rule confirming Taiwan’s representation as part of the whole of China at the United Nations.

Guo concluded by warning that the biggest threats to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are separatist activities and external interference. To maintain cross-strait peace, he urged all parties to uphold the one-China principle and unequivocally oppose any form of “Taiwan independence.”
