When dawn broke over the Gaza Strip, hopes for relief rose after a long wait. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the announcement of a deal to secure a ceasefire and free hostages held in Gaza.
“The suffering must end,” Guterres said, urging all sides to fully stick to the terms. He stressed that every hostage should be released with dignity and that fighting must stop “once and for all.”
The phased agreement promises a lasting ceasefire and immediate, unrestricted humanitarian and commercial access to Gaza. For many, this breakthrough could signal the first step towards rebuilding lives in the devastated territory.
The United Nations has pledged its full support to implement the ceasefire and to kick-start recovery and reconstruction efforts across Gaza.
Looking beyond the immediate truce, Guterres urged stakeholders to seize this moment to chart a political path forward. He highlighted the need to end the occupation, guarantee the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, and pursue a two-State solution that ensures lasting peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
