In a powerful statement on Wednesday, the Chinese mainland's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Binhua warned that the momentum toward reunification is "irresistible" and that efforts to seek independence are "bound to fail."
Chen was responding to comments by DPP leader Lai Ching-te, who appeared on "The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show" and highlighted what he described as a growing "mainland threat."
According to the spokesperson, Lai's remarks distort facts, hype up a so-called threat, and fuel division by pushing a narrative of forced independence and reliance on foreign support. Chen characterized Lai as a "destroyer of cross-Straits peace" and a "creator of crises in the Taiwan Straits."
Chen reaffirmed that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, calling it a historical and legal fact that "cannot be questioned" or changed. "Reunification will prevail, and Taiwan independence will perish," he said, warning that separatist forces are "no more than ants trying to shake a tree."
This latest exchange underscores the deep-rooted tensions across the Taiwan Strait and the high stakes facing both sides. As diplomatic and domestic pressures mount, all eyes remain on how these tit-for-tat statements will shape the future of cross-strait relations.
