China Trials Record 26MW Offshore Wind Turbine

China is making waves in the renewable energy sector with the trial of a record-breaking 26-megawatt offshore wind turbine in Dongying City, Shandong Province. Installed on August 29, 2025, at the Dongying Wind Power Equipment Testing and Certification Innovation Base, this prototype dwarfs its peers with a rotor diameter of 310 meters and 153-meter-long blades.

Located onshore for the prototype stage, the giant unit stands nearly 200 meters tall—comparable to a 60-story skyscraper. Despite its land-based setup, it’s engineered specifically for demanding offshore conditions, from deep waters to fierce storms.

Designed and manufactured entirely in China by Dongfang Electric Corporation, the 26MW turbine not only sets a new single-unit capacity record but also showcases the Chinese mainland’s drive toward self-reliance in green tech. Its 310-meter rotor sweep—the equivalent of an Olympic track laid end to end—captures massive wind energy with each rotation.

Green energy advocates see this milestone as a critical step for the offshore wind industry, which is racing to scale up capacity to meet global climate goals. For business leaders and tech enthusiasts, the Dongying testing base is a live lab for next-generation manufacturing and digital monitoring systems that could soon be deployed worldwide.

As the prototype undergoes performance and reliability trials, all eyes are on when the offshore version will spin blades at sea—potentially powering millions of homes while cutting carbon footprints. Stay tuned as we track this leviathan’s journey from the test stand to the open ocean.
