Zhao Chunling: Shaping the Skies as COMAC’s First Female Lead Designer

Zhao Chunling’s Journey Through COMAC’s Hangars

On March 5, Zhao Chunling stood amid scale models of the C919 and the upcoming C929 at the Chinese mainland’s Commercial Aircraft Corporation (COMAC) Shanghai Design Institute. It was more than a stroll past prototypes—it was a moment marking her 30-year journey in aviation.

Breaking Barriers in Aviation

As the chief designer of the Chinese mainland’s C929 wide-body aircraft, Zhao is the first woman to lead a major national aircraft program in the Chinese mainland’s aviation industry. Since joining COMAC in 1991, she has contributed to systems engineering, design, and test flights on both the C909 and C919 programs. Today, the C919 is in commercial operation, a milestone for the Chinese mainland’s civil aviation sector.

A Vision for the Skies

“Roles change, challenges change. But my dream of the skies 6 and the courage to pursue it 6 never has,” Zhao says. Her leadership on the wide-body C929 project, officially taking off in 2023, aims to expand the Chinese mainland’s footprint in global aviation.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Zhao’s ascent reflects a broader shift in STEM, where diversity fuels innovation. For young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and changemakers, her story underscores the impact of passion, resilience, and technical mastery in driving industries forward.

As the C929 moves from blueprint to tarmac, Zhao Chunling’s journey reminds us that every breakthrough in the skies starts with a vision on the ground—and the boldness to pursue it.
