France’s PM Lecornu Names First Cabinet: Le Maire Moves to Defense

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu rolled out his first cabinet lineup on Sunday, unveiling 18 key figures set to steer France’s policy direction ahead of next year’s budget showdown.

Longtime economy chief Bruno Le Maire switches portfolios to become defense minister, marking a major pivot after seven years overseeing France’s finances. Replacing him, Roland Lescure steps in as economy minister with a tight budget plan in his sights.

Several top posts saw continuity: Jean-Noel Barrot remains at foreign affairs, Bruno Retailleau holds onto the interior brief, Gerald Darmanin stays on justice duties, and Rachida Dati keeps her culture portfolio.

The appointments include 16 full ministers and two ministers delegate, rounding out Lecornu’s initial team. President Emmanuel Macron will convene the cabinet’s first meeting on Monday afternoon at the Elysee Palace.

National Rally leader Jordan Bardella quickly criticized the lineup on social media, calling it "continuity" disguised as change. His remarks highlight the political battles shaping French policy as the government prepares for a crucial confidence vote and the next annual budget.

For global watchers, Lecornu’s selections signal Macron’s priority: blend experienced hands with fresh faces to address economic pressures and defense challenges in an increasingly complex world.
