From Yurt to Milan: Kirgiz Model Reimagines Fashion with Ethnic Heritage

From the wind-swept Tian Shan mountains to the glittering runways of Milan, Kirgiz model Guyay is rewriting the story of ethnic fashion on a global stage.

Raised in a yurt in Xinjiang’s Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture, Guyay grew up listening to Manas—one of China’s three great epics—sung by her grandmother and mother. Deeply proud of her roots and united as a member of the Chinese nation, she carried those traditions all the way to Milan Fashion Week as a contracted model.

But it was back home where Guyay truly found her creative spark. Determined to shine a spotlight on her community, she launched the Xiji Fashion Show, inviting local villagers to step onto the runway alongside professional models. The result: a living stage where rural plants, handcrafted textiles and traditional Kirgiz musical instruments blended seamlessly with contemporary design.

Dozens of artisans contributed hand-embroidered garments inspired by local motifs, while villagers performed live on horsehair fiddles and wooden flutes. By weaving intangible cultural heritage into every detail—from stage décor made of wildflowers to the rhythmic pulse of folk melodies—Guyay created an immersive celebration of identity, place and creativity.

The Xiji Fashion Show has since drawn hundreds of visitors, from curious travelers to culture-loving locals. It stands as a powerful example of how storytelling, community and sustainability can come together to redefine fashion’s future.

For global citizens, entrepreneurs and changemakers alike, Guyay’s journey offers fresh inspiration: true innovation often grows where tradition and imagination meet.
