Europe Condemns Israel’s Interception of Gaza Aid Flotilla

European leaders rallied Wednesday after Israel intercepted the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, urging protection and swift repatriation of their citizens.

The flotilla, a convoy of around 50 vessels carrying over 500 volunteers from more than 40 countries, aimed to challenge Israel's naval blockade and deliver critical food and medical supplies to Palestinians.

According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, 'several ships from the flotilla' were detained safely as volunteers were transferred to an Israeli port.

Portugal confirmed three of its citizens, including a member of Parliament, were held aboard. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa pledged 'full consular support' to ensure their rights and safe return.

In Rome, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto condemned the interception 'in the strongest manner,' and authorized an immediate naval dispatch to assist Italian nationals on the flotilla.

France and Spain issued joint calls for Israel to guarantee the safety and consular protection of their citizens, pressing for expedited repatriation.

Later Wednesday night, the Global Sumud Flotilla reported what it called 'active aggression' by the Israeli military: the vessel Florida was allegedly rammed at sea, while others like Yulara and Meteque were targeted with water cannons. No injuries were reported, but organizers denounced the maneuvers as 'illegal attacks against unarmed humanitarian vessels.'

As tensions rise, European capitals are watching closely, balancing diplomatic pressure with calls for humanitarian access in a region under blockade.
