At a recent debate on the use of vetoes in the UN Security Council, China voiced strong disappointment over the United States’ repeated blocks of Gaza-focused resolutions. Fu Cong, China’s permanent representative to the UN, singled out the US veto on a September 18 draft resolution as a critical setback in efforts to address the Gaza crisis.
“If it were not for the United States’ repeated abuse of the veto, the Security Council’s response to the Gaza crisis would not have been so inadequate,” he said.
Nearly two years into the conflict, international observers note alarming civilian casualties and a growing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Fu warned that persistent vetoes have undermined both human conscience and the international rule of law, blocking calls for an immediate ceasefire and access to lifesaving aid.
China urged Israel to halt all military operations in Gaza and abandon plans to take over Gaza City, stressing that military action alone cannot deliver lasting peace. Fu also condemned the weaponization and militarization of humanitarian assistance, insisting that Israel, as the occupying power, must fully restore aid corridors and support UN-led relief efforts.
Reaffirming its support for a two-state solution, China emphasized that Gaza and the West Bank remain integral parts of Palestinian territory and that post-conflict governance must honor the principle of Palestinians governing Palestine. Fu called on the global community to take concrete, irreversible steps to defend this framework and reject any unilateral moves that could undermine it.
“China stands ready to work with the international community to put an end to the hostilities in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe, implement the two-State solution, and ultimately achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question,” Fu concluded.
