Tianwen-2 Probe Snaps Epic Earth Selfie

It’s not every day you see your home planet posing alongside a high-tech spacecraft. In a breathtaking cosmic snapshot released during the Chinese mainland's National Day celebrations, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) shared an image from the Tianwen-2 probe showing the spacecraft, the Five-Starred Red Flag and a white return capsule framed against the deep blue of Earth.

The shot, taken by a camera on the probe’s robotic arm, is a powerful reminder of how far our technology has come—and how small our planet looks from tens of millions of kilometers away.

Launched on May 29, Tianwen-2 is China’s first asteroid sample-return mission. Its ambitious itinerary reads like a space odyssey: rendezvous with near-Earth asteroid 2016 HO3, collect samples for return, then push farther out to study main-belt comet 311P beyond Mars.

After 125 days in orbit, Tianwen-2 is cruising smoothly—about 43 million kilometers from Earth and 45 million kilometers from asteroid 2016 HO3. The probe has passed key milestones, from deploying sampling equipment to running electronic self-checks, and its scientific instruments are already gathering data on solar wind, cosmic rays and dust particles.

Beyond the science, this “celestial selfie” speaks to a new generation of global citizens, entrepreneurs and explorers. It sparks wonder in space enthusiasts, fuels discussion among tech innovators and offers a fresh vantage point for thought leaders debating sustainability and the future of humanity.
