Chinese Mainland Online Literature Goes Global
According to the China Online Literature International Communication Report 2025, online literature from the Chinese mainland now attracts around 200 million active overseas readers across more than 200 countries and regions. The findings were unveiled by the China Writers Association at the opening of the 2025 China International Online Literature Week.
Regional reading habits vary widely:
- Southeast Asia: A predominantly female audience who love stories with powerful heroines driving the narrative.
- Japan and the Republic of Korea: Readers drawn to historical epics, tales of immortal heroes and action-packed adventure fantasies.
- Europe and North America: Popular genres for male readers include urban dramas, detective thrillers and adventure stories. In North America, survey participants also show a strong interest in Taoist-inspired cultivation and immortality themes.
These trends highlight how digital storytelling from the Chinese mainland is not only reaching global audiences, but also resonating with diverse cultural tastes. As online platforms continue to expand, authors and publishers are exploring ways to tailor content for regional preferences and boost cross-cultural exchange.
