At a regular briefing on Thursday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun delivered a strong rebuke of Lin Chia-lung’s trip to New York during the United Nations General Assembly session.
Guo accused the United States of handing a public stage to “Taiwan independence” separatists by welcoming Lin—head of Taiwan’s so-called foreign affairs authorities—to interact with U.S. politicians and Taiwan’s diplomatic partners in New York.
According to the spokesperson, the visit breached the one-China principle, violated the three China-U.S. joint communiqués and amounted to gross interference in China’s internal affairs. He warned that there would be no positive outcome and said any push for Taiwan independence would inevitably backfire.
China also called on the handful of countries still maintaining diplomatic ties with Taiwan not to be swayed by separatist forces, urging that jumping on the Taiwan independence bandwagon would lead nowhere.
The spokesperson reaffirmed there is one China in the world, with Taiwan as an inalienable part of its territory, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing all of China. He concluded that the global commitment to the one-China principle is unshakable and that nothing will stop China from complete reunification.
