AI Stock Chatbots Fuel Robo-Advisor Boom — Caution Ahead

"Chatbot, what stocks should I buy?" It's a question more retail investors are asking AI as robo-advisory services surge worldwide.

Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), algorithm-driven advice is accessible to anyone with an internet connection. No longer exclusive to big banks or institutional investors, these digital advisers are shaking up how we pick and monitor investments.

Research and Markets forecasts the robo-advisory market—covering fintech startups, banks, and wealth managers—to skyrocket from $61.75 billion in revenue last year to $470.91 billion by 2029. That's nearly a 600% jump in a single decade.

Take Jeremy Leung, a seasoned UBS analyst until this year. After losing his job at a Swiss bank, he turned to a chatbot to steer his multi-asset portfolio. "I no longer have the luxury of a Bloomberg terminal or those expensive market-data services," he explains.

Leung's move reflects a broader trend: about one in 10 retail investors already use a chatbot for stock picks, and half say they'd consider AI tools to adjust their portfolios. That insight comes from a global survey of 11,000 investors by eToro, which itself supports 30 million users.

Dan Moczulski, UK managing director at eToro, praises the potential of AI: "AI models can be brilliant." But he adds a cautionary note: generic models aren't crystal balls. They can misquote figures, lean on old narratives, or overfit past price actions.

So what's the smart play? Experts suggest choosing AI platforms specifically trained on market data rather than generic chatbots. This specialist approach helps ensure analysis is accurate, timely, and attuned to real-world shifts.

For young global investors, digital nomads, and fintech entrepreneurs hungry for an edge, robo-advisors offer an exciting toolkit. Yet, as with any high-stakes game, understanding the limitations of AI—and balancing digital insights with human expertise—remains key.

Whether you're exploring your first digital portfolio or building a fintech startup, the AI-assisted advisory boom is one trend you can't afford to ignore. Just remember: in the fast-moving world of markets, curiosity and caution go hand in hand.
