Xinjiang Celebrates 70th Anniversary with Grand Urumqi Gathering

From Silk Road Crossroads to Modern Hub

On Thursday, President Xi Jinping joined a grand gathering in Urumqi to celebrate the 70th founding anniversary of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. What began as a Silk Road crossroads has evolved into a key link in global trade, powered by high-speed rail spanning over 4,600 kilometers and an airport network connecting Urumqi to more than 80 domestic and international routes.

Cultural Mosaic on Display

The festivities highlighted the region's rich tapestry of cultures, with Uygur dance troupes, music ensembles and artisans showcasing centuries-old crafts. Visitors at the Urumqi International Grand Bazaar sampled local cuisine and explored vibrant stalls, celebrating a living heritage that blends tradition with modern flair.

Innovation and Sustainability at the Forefront

Economic growth has been matched by a push toward green energy. Renewable sources now account for 30% of the regional grid, with solar farms stretching across the desert and wind turbines dotting the foothills. Tech incubators in Urumqi are attracting startups focused on agritech and e-commerce, driving new opportunities for young entrepreneurs.

Looking Ahead: A New Chapter

As the region enters its next 70 years, leaders are eyeing digital nomads and global travelers. Coworking spaces and eco-friendly homestays are on the rise, inviting visitors to experience Xinjiang’s landscapes—from the Tianshan Mountains to the Karakuri Lakes—while supporting local communities.

"The sky is the limit for Xinjiang's next 70 years," said Aiyiti Aben, a Urumqi-based entrepreneur who launched a sustainable tourism startup. "We’re ready to write the next chapter."
