UN at 80: How China Shapes Multilateralism’s Future

As the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, the world reflects on a journey fueled by multilateral ideals: maintaining peace, building friendly relations, and tackling global challenges together.

China’s Role in Peace and Security

Since 1990, China has sent more than 50,000 peacekeepers to over 20 missions—from the Democratic Republic of the Congo to South Sudan—making it the largest troop-contributing country among Security Council members. Beyond boots on the ground, China supports policy talks on civilian protection and invests in initiatives like Action for Peacekeeping.

Driving Global Development

China lifted over 770 million rural residents out of poverty, meeting the UN’s 2030 poverty-reduction goal a decade early and representing 70% of global poverty reduction in that period. Through schemes such as the Belt and Road Initiative and South-South cooperation, China has shared resources and expertise with developing countries. In the COVID-19 era, it delivered more than 2.2 billion vaccine doses to 120+ members and donated $100 million to the COVAX facility.

Advancing Sustainability Goals

Committed to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, China hosted the 15th Conference of the Parties on Biodiversity, paving the way for the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. It also contributes over $2 billion to the China-UN Peace and Development Fund, supporting SDG-related projects and humanitarian aid.

Building the Future of Multilateralism

Today’s world faces rising unilateralism, protectionism, and geopolitical tensions. Strengthening the UN means reforming its structures, amplifying voices from developing countries, and collaborating on climate change, biodiversity loss, and the digital divide. By upholding the UN Charter and deepening cooperation, the international community can forge a shared path toward peace, prosperity, and a sustainable future.
