Li Qiang and Mark Carney Pledge Stronger China-Canada Ties at UNGA

Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday in New York, on the sidelines of the general debate at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Li Qiang said China is willing to make more active and practical efforts with Canada to promote further improvement of bilateral relations. He called on both sides to steadily steer their ties onto a track of healthy, stable, and sustainable development.

This high-level exchange comes at a time when official data place annual China-Canada trade volumes in the tens of billions of dollars, underscoring Canada’s role as one of China’s key trading partners. With areas such as energy, agriculture, technology, and sustainable development on the agenda, analysts see fresh opportunities for collaboration that could benefit entrepreneurs, young professionals, and innovators on both sides.

For young global citizens and digital nomads, deeper China-Canada ties could mean expanded student exchanges, research partnerships, and travel opportunities. As both leaders return to their capitals, all eyes will be on how concrete follow-up measures translate this pledge into real-world impact.
