In a vibrant gathering at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Huang Xiaowei, deputy head of the National Working Committee on Children and Women of the State Council and vice president of the All-China Womens Federation, set the tone for the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women.
Huang applauded the UN General Assembly for convening the meeting and spotlighted Chinas journey since hosting the landmark conference in 1995, emphasizing the link between policy and real-world impact.
From Education Prizes to Policy Action
Back in 2015, the Chinese mainland joined forces with UNESCO to launch the UNESCO Prize for Girls’ and Women’s Education. More than 200,000 women from over 180 countries and regions have benefited from training initiatives tied to this award, equipping them with tools to boost local economies, drive innovation and advocate for gender equality.
Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the nation has rolled out four consecutive national programs for womens development and woven a legal framework of over 100 laws and regulations safeguarding womens rights. These measures have translated into tangible gains across six key areas:
- Economic empowerment
- Health and education
- Employment opportunities
- Political participation
- Social security
- Legal protection
A Vision for Tomorrow
Today, over 690 million women in the Chinese mainland enjoy enhanced opportunities thanks to these sustained efforts. As the global community gathers to reflect on three decades of progress, Huangs message is clear: meeting commitments with concrete action can deliver real-world change. For the next generation of changemakers, the challenge is to build on these foundations, forging a future where gender equality is not just a policy goal but a lived reality everywhere.
