Dance Drama ‘Dunhuang’ Fuses Ballet and Eastern Dance

The National Ballet of China’s latest production, “Dunhuang,” takes audiences on a mesmerizing journey through time. Drawing on the vibrant murals of the Mogao Grottoes, the production bridges Western classical ballet with the sinuous movements of Dunhuang dance to craft a fresh stage aesthetic.

At the heart of this cultural fusion is Feng Ying, a distinguished ballet artist whose visionary approach led to this harmonious blend. In conversation with CGTN’s Chang Ting, Feng Ying reveals the rigorous creative process behind “Dunhuang” — from mastering the precise footwork of pointe technique to capturing the fluid hand gestures and undulating torso central to Dunhuang dance.

“We wanted to honor the legacy of Dunhuang’s ancient artists,” Feng Ying explains, “while staying true to the technical elegance of classical ballet. It’s a delicate balance between strength and grace, history and innovation.”

To bring that balance to life, set designers repurposed the murals’ color palette — jade greens, saffron yellows, and terracotta reds — into sweeping backdrops and flowing costumes. Lighting cues echo the shifting sands of the Gobi Desert, guiding viewers through a narrative that celebrates cultural exchange.

Early audiences have praised the performance for its visual splendor and emotional resonance. As young global citizens and art lovers alike seek fresh stories on the world stage, “Dunhuang” stands out as a testament to creative dialogue across borders. For dance fans, travelers, and changemakers, this production is more than a show — it’s an invitation to explore how art can unite distinct traditions in a shared moment of wonder.
