Ningxia’s Desert-to-Orchard Revolution

Ningxia’s Desert-to-Orchard Revolution

Nestled in the northwest of the Chinese mainland, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region has defied harsh desert conditions to forge a green legacy. Visiting journalists witnessed how ecological restoration efforts and industrial innovation are sowing the seeds for a sustainable future.

Three generations of desert to green

"It took three generations, about 70 years, to turn this bare desert into the green land we see today," says Wang Xiaolin, Director of Baijitan Management Station at the Ningxia Lingwu Baijitan National Nature Reserve. Strolling across fields now carpeted with plants and alive with small beetles, the transformation is nothing short of breathtaking.

By aligning ecological initiatives with vibrant industrial growth, local teams have expanded green belts while laying the foundation for emerging agri-business sectors. This blend of restoration and innovation is reshaping the regional economy and offering a blueprint for sustainable development.

As young entrepreneurs and climate advocates scan the globe for real-world impact stories, Ningxia’s desert-to-orchard revolution shines as a testament to what persistence and partnership can achieve—even in the harshest landscapes.
