Dozens Killed as Israel Launches Major Ground Offensive in Gaza City

On the night of September 15, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched a large-scale ground offensive in Gaza City, escalating a conflict that has already displaced hundreds of thousands. Local officials and the official Palestinian news agency WAFA report that at least 53 Palestinians were killed by gunfire and airstrikes across the Gaza Strip since dawn, most in the city.

The IDF said its 98th and 162nd Armored Divisions entered Gaza City around 10 p.m., backed by intensive air support. In the coming days, the 36th Division is expected to join the operation to encircle the city from all sides. About 130,000 reservists are being mobilized to support the offensive, military sources say.

Civilians face a stark dilemma: IDF warnings urged residents to leave, but many of the one million people in Gaza City have limited resources, health challenges, or fear the dangers of travel. Military spokesman Avichay Adraee called the area 'a dangerous combat zone' and said staying increases the risk of civilian casualties.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the assault as intense and warned of severe consequences in this critical stage. Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed to dismantle Hamas infrastructure with 'an iron fist' and promised the operation will not stop until its objectives are achieved.

The offensive has divided global opinion. In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio offered strong backing, while the European Union plans new sanctions, warning that further operations will fuel destruction, displacement, and a deepening humanitarian crisis. The United Nations’ human rights chief condemned the ground assault as unacceptable, and several Western leaders have called for an immediate ceasefire.

As Gaza City braces for an intensified siege, questions loom over civilian safety, the fate of hostages, and the long-term plan for the territory’s future. With urban warfare unfolding in the Strip’s largest city, the region stands at a tense crossroads that will shape the next chapter of this protracted conflict.
