IAEA Conference in Vienna Urges Nuclear Non-Proliferation Protection

The 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) opened on Monday in Vienna, drawing over 2,500 participants from across the globe. Against a backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions and growing inequality, leaders united behind a single message: the global nuclear non-proliferation regime must be strengthened.

“In a world where technology can both heal and harm, the IAEA stands as a guardian of peaceful progress,” said Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General, highlighting the strain on nuclear norms amid armed conflicts and acts of terror. Grossi’s appeal to the UN Security Council underscored the urgent need to protect treaties that keep weapons-grade material out of dangerous hands.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, represented by Ghada Waly of the UN Office at Vienna, praised the agency’s role in steering nuclear science and technology towards development goals. “Together, we can ensure these tools advance sustainable energy, healthcare and agriculture, while safeguarding humanity,” his message read.

Over the next week, delegates will review the IAEA’s 2024 Annual Report and the proposed 2026 budget, and tackle critical issues from nuclear safety and security in Ukraine and the Middle East, to monitoring efforts in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Data-driven sessions promise to break down complex policies into actionable insights, inspiring young changemakers to join the conversation.

As global citizens, entrepreneurs and travelers watch closely, the conference’s outcomes could reshape how nuclear technology fuels our future—responsibly and transparently. Stay tuned for more updates on how Vienna’s gathering will drive real-world impact in the realm of global security.
