Macao SAR Kicks Off 8th Legislative Assembly Election

Voting for the eighth Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR commenced at 9 a.m. on Sunday, as residents headed to 37 polling stations across the region.

The assembly will include 33 seats: 14 filled by direct vote, 12 by indirect means, and seven appointed by the chief executive within 15 days following the final results.

Polls remain open until 9 p.m., and preliminary outcomes are expected early Monday morning, offering insight into the region’s evolving political landscape.

In 2024, legislators refined the election law to strengthen the candidate qualification review process and further implement the principle 'patriots administering Macao'. These amendments also streamline each stage to ensure a fair, just, clean, and orderly vote.

Each term spans four years for permanent residents of the SAR, except for the inaugural term, which follows its own timeline. Observers will be watching closely as the new assembly takes shape.
