FUZHOU, September 22–26, 2023 — The 12th Silk Road International Film Festival landed in Fuzhou this week under the theme Silk Road Connects the World, Film Festival Illuminates Fuzhou, spotlighting cross-border collaborations, new technologies and emerging voices.
Expanding global cooperation
More than 3,500 film submissions poured in from 135 countries and regions, with about 100 features selected from 44 markets including Russia, France, Italy and Iran. Over 400 guests—directors, cultural officials and industry leaders— have gathered in Fuzhou to network, share insights and forge co-production deals.
Indonesia as guest of honor
Honoring 75 years of diplomatic ties and the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference, Indonesia is the festival’s guest of honor. Screenings of Indonesian classics, cultural exhibitions and industry forums aim to deepen collaboration in co-productions, technology and market development.
Building Belt and Road partnerships
Nine participating countries presented national film policies on emerging platforms, while nine international festivals signed sister-festival agreements. The China office of the Cambodia Asia Film Festival also opened in Fuzhou, creating a year-round bridge for cultural exchange.
Fuzhou as a cross-strait cultural hub
A dedicated cross-strait film section underscores Fuzhou’s role as a gateway between the Chinese mainland and the Taiwan region. Highlights include a short-film showcase, an AI-driven competition, Taiwan film promotions and project pitches for young filmmakers working in the Chinese mainland.
Golden Silk Road Awards
The festival’s top honor is decided by a 13-member international jury chaired by Chinese director Chen Kaige. Jurors include Indonesian director Garin Nugroho, Belgian cinematographer Matthias Delvaux and Italian director Gabriele Mainetti. Awards span 10 categories, from Best Film to Best Director.
