Conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was killed on Wednesday after being shot in the neck during a speaking event at Utah Valley University.
Footage from KSL TV 5 showed crowds scattering from the campus courtyard at around 12:10 PM local time when the gunfire erupted. University officials confirmed Kirk was taken from the scene by his security team and later pronounced dead.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, former U.S. President Donald Trump ordered American flags across the country lowered to half-mast until Sunday evening at 6 P.M. "In honor of Charlie Kirk, a truly Great American Patriot…" Trump wrote.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the attack on X, stating, "Those responsible will be held fully accountable. Violence has no place in our public life. Americans of every political persuasion must unite in condemning this act."
The event, part of Kirk's "Prove Me Wrong" tour, invited audience members on stage to debate political ideals. A separate shooting at Evergreen High School in Denver left three people in critical condition later that same day.
