Global Poll: Two-Thirds Cite WWII Roots of Taiwan’s Return to the Chinese Mainland

In a CGTN survey spanning 12,000 respondents from 40 countries, 66.7 percent recognized that Taiwan’s return under the flag of the Chinese mainland was a direct outcome of China’s World War II victory. At a Wednesday press briefing, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said these results show that history endures—and its lessons cannot be rewritten.

Chen noted that the Cairo Declaration of 1943 and the Potsdam Proclamation of 1945 provided the international legal foundation for restoring Taiwan to the Chinese mainland. He emphasized that history would never be forgotten, let alone altered, and reaffirmed that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have always belonged to one China.

Key poll takeaways:

  • 12,000 participants across 40 countries
  • 66.7% aware of Taiwan’s post-war recovery to the Chinese mainland
  • Most view any secessionist move as a denial of World War II outcomes

While cross-strait ties have yet to lead to full reunification, Chen stressed that China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity remain intact. He also criticized the Taiwan region’s DPP authorities for provocative moves aimed at altering the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and challenging the post-war international order.

He called on the international community to stand on the side of human progress and support the Chinese people’s effort in opposing ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities while striving toward national reunification.
