China and Australia Secure U23 AFC Asian Cup Finals Spots

China and Australia played out a 0-0 draw in their final group match of the U23 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, on Tuesday. Australia topped Group D, booking their place in the January 2026 finals in Saudi Arabia, while China advanced as one of the four best-performing runners-up.

Australia came close twice: in the 39th minute, Nathanael Blair's header was denied by Chinese goalkeeper Li Hao, and early in the second half, Oscar Priestman's volley from close range was brilliantly saved by Li again.

"We came here knowing it would be a tough match against a strong side," said Australia coach Antony Vidmar. "Our players fought tirelessly in challenging conditions, and we’re very proud of that effort."

China coach Antonio Puche Vicente praised his players' resilience. "I asked my players to bring some happiness to Chinese football fans, who have been waiting for a moment to celebrate," he said. "Today, they delivered, fighting like 11 terracotta warriors on the pitch."

The U23 AFC Asian Cup finals kick off in January 2026 in Saudi Arabia, where 16 teams will compete for the title.
