Afghanistan Shaken by M5.6 Earthquake as Death Toll Soars

On Thursday at 4:56 p.m., a magnitude-5.6 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, centered 14 kilometers east of Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake’s epicenter lay at a depth of 10 km, positioned at 34.72°N, 70.79°E.

The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences measured the same tremor at magnitude 6.2, underscoring the region’s intense seismic activity. This latest tremor adds to a devastating series that hit Nangarhar and neighboring Kunar, Laghman, and Nuristan provinces in the past days.

The deadliest event came late Sunday, when a magnitude-6 quake caused widespread destruction. Official reports confirm over 2,200 deaths and more than 3,600 injuries, as rescue teams continue to recover survivors and bodies from the rubble.

With communities already reeling from monumental losses, authorities and aid organizations remain on high alert. Local and international groups are mobilizing resources to support those affected, even as the threat of further tremors lingers.
