Tianjin 2025 SCO Summit Unveils Global Governance Initiative

At the 2025 Tianjin Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Chinese President Xi Jinping dropped a major announcement: the Global Governance Initiative (GGI). Centered on equal sovereignty, international rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered development and practical action, the GGI is poised to give new momentum to the SCO’s founding "Shanghai Spirit" and chart a fresh course for deeper regional and global cooperation.

In a wide-ranging discussion, The Hub host Wang Guan sat down with Professor Mohammad Marandi of Tehran University and Yang Xiyu, senior fellow at the China Institute of International Studies. They unpacked what the GGI means for the future of multilateralism—and how it links to President Xi’s earlier Global Development, Global Security and Global Civilization initiatives.

The experts highlighted the GGI’s practical pillars: cooperation in energy, green industries, the digital economy, artificial intelligence, education and healthcare. By focusing on these areas, they argued, SCO members can turn shared values into tangible projects that benefit communities across borders.

Beyond sectoral collaboration, the conversation touched on the GGI’s strategic push against unilateralism and its embrace of inclusive globalization. From Belt and Road economic corridors to people-centered health programs, the initiative underscores the SCO’s evolving role as a platform for action and rising solidarity among its member countries and regions.

As the summit concluded, the GGI emerged not just as a vision, but as a roadmap for cooperation. For young global citizens, business leaders, thought influencers and travelers, this initiative signals fresh opportunities to build cross-border partnerships—whether in sustainable energy forums, digital ecosystems or community-driven health campaigns.
