China Kicks Off First National Science Popularization Month

In a vibrant kick-off today, China launched its first National Science Popularization Month, a 30-day celebration turning the entire nation into a science carnival.

Organized by the China Association for Science and Technology, this month-long festival shines a spotlight on scientific breakthroughs, honors the legacy of pioneering researchers, and invites everyone to engage with science through hands-on fun.

The opening ceremonies at the National Communication Center for Science and Technology and the China Science and Technology Museum in Beijing set the stage for September’s lineup: over 100 exhibitions and events across the Chinese mainland.

Among the highlights is an Innovation Achievement Exhibition featuring projects from more than 30 research teams. For the first time, visitors can watch, listen, and touch a series of one-of-a-kind exhibits—including an electronic fabric weaving conductive fibers that glow under alternating current.

“The core of this new electronic fabric is its conductive fibers. Though the fiber itself is small, it contains intricate microscopic structures. When we apply an alternating current, the luminescent layer emits light,” explains Wei Lei from the China Science and Technology Museum.

Events will stretch from major cities to local communities, with Ni Zhiyu, head of the science popularization department at the China Association for Science and Technology, calling for a festival that “covers every region, uses full-media communication, and encourages participation and sharing by all residents.”

Backed by the revised Science and Technology Popularization Law—effective since December 2024—September is now officially designated as National Science Popularization Month. Expect a nationwide wave of curiosity, collaboration, and discovery that puts science at the heart of public life.
