Thailand Appoints Acting PM Phumtham Wechayachai After Court Ruling

Thailand’s cabinet named Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai as acting prime minister on Saturday after a Constitutional Court decision ended Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s term. The move ensures governance continuity while leaders prepare for the next chapter.

At a special cabinet meeting, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Chusak Sirinil revealed plans to operate under a strict caretaker framework. This structure aims to maintain stability and stick to constitutional limits during the transition.

Prommin Lertsuridej also joined the inner circle, taking on the role of Secretary General to the Prime Minister. His appointment signals a focus on organized coordination as the government moves forward.

Under legal requirements, the current cabinet will remain in place until a new administration takes office. Parliament members have been summoned to convene from September 3 to 5, during which they will vote on a new prime minister from the candidate list submitted ahead of the May 2023 general election.

With a clear roadmap and tight timeline, Thailand is set to navigate its political crossroads efficiently, balancing legal duty with public expectations for steady leadership.
