Li Chenggang in DC: Steering China-U.S. Trade Toward Win-Win Cooperation

China’s top trade negotiator, Li Chenggang, touched down in Washington D.C. on August 27, kicking off a three-day visit aimed at breathing new life into China-U.S. economic and trade ties.

As China’s international trade representative and vice minister of commerce, Li led a delegation that held talks with counterparts at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. According to a statement by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, both sides reviewed progress on the consensus reached between their presidents during a June 5 phone call.

Li emphasized that mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation should guide all measures. He called for full use of existing China-U.S. economic and trade consultation mechanisms, urging both sides to manage differences through dialogue on an equal footing and expand areas of cooperation.

Beyond government channels, Li also sat down with the U.S.-China Business Council, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and representatives from American enterprises. These discussions explored ways to promote sound, stable and sustainable development of trade relations that benefit businesses and consumers on both sides.

Both sides will reconvene through established consultation channels in the coming months, aiming to turn high-level agreements into real-world outcomes that strengthen the backbone of global trade.
