China Urges Israel to Halt Gaza Operations to Avert Humanitarian Crisis

At a UN Security Council open debate on the Israel-Palestine issue, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Geng Shuang, called on Israel to immediately stop its military operations in Gaza. He warned that the nearly 700-day conflict has turned life for the territory’s 2 million residents into “a living hell.”

“Violence cannot bring security, and force will not deliver peace,” Geng said, condemning recent strikes such as the August 25 attack on Nasser Hospital that killed more than 20 civilians. He cautioned that plans to seize Gaza City risked triggering further bloodshed, displacement and insecurity.

Highlighting the unacceptable harm to civilians and damage to critical facilities, Geng urged Israel to open all border crossings, restore full humanitarian access and cooperate with the United Nations to deliver aid. He accused Israel of deliberately obstructing relief efforts.

Geng also criticized Israel’s approval of settlement construction in the E1 area of the West Bank, warning it would undermine territorial continuity for Palestine and erode prospects for a two-state solution.

He called for urgent international action to secure a ceasefire, ease the humanitarian crisis and revive the two-state framework. “Influential countries must take a fair and responsible stance and play a constructive role,” Geng said.

“China will continue to work with the international community to help end the fighting in Gaza, advance the two-state solution, and ultimately achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question,” he added, underscoring Beijing’s commitment to diplomatic efforts.
