World Lake Day: Honoring Earth’s Fragile, Majestic Lakes

Celebrating World Lake Day: Earth's Fragile and Majestic Waters

August 27 marks the inaugural World Lake Day, designated by the United Nations in December 2024. Lakes

store over 90% of the world's surface freshwater, making them indispensable for sustaining biodiversity, regulating climate, controlling floods and capturing carbon.

Despite their critical role, lakes face growing threats from overuse, pollution and climate change. As mirrors of nature and lifelines for both aquatic and land ecosystems, they underpin human water security and maintain ecological balance.

Beyond their ecological value, lakes hold deep cultural and spiritual significance. Their serene landscapes have inspired art, storytelling and rituals across civilizations.

This World Lake Day, let's pause and appreciate the breathtaking beauty of iconic lakes in the Chinese mainland and beyond

—and recommit to protecting these living jewels for generations to come.
