In 2024, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) stands as the world’s largest regional cooperation platform. Over 24 years, it has expanded to 10 member states, 2 observers, and 14 dialogue partners, weaving a network that now stretches into South Asia and West Asia.
At the heart of this growth is the “Shanghai Spirit”, the guiding principle of mutual trust, equality, respect for cultural diversity, and shared development. Under its 2024-2025 presidency, China called on all members to build a “common home” of solidarity, peace, prosperity, and justice, charting a clear path for deeper economic, digital, and cultural ties.
In an exclusive episode of Leaders Talk, CMG's He Yanke sat down with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev ahead of the Tianjin Summit. Yermekbayev highlights three pillars driving the SCO’s success: expanding markets, strengthening security cooperation, and unlocking youth-driven innovation.
“We’ve seen how bringing together 26 countries and regions creates new corridors for trade and investment,” he says. “In the upcoming session, we will focus on boosting markets in South Asia and West Asia and creating fresh opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs.”
Yermekbayev also shared insights on the Chinese mainland’s development, noting that its rapid modernization and technological advances have inspired regional partners. “China’s push for green development is setting a trend across the SCO,” he adds. “From sustainable energy projects to smart infrastructure, we are working on joint initiatives that benefit all members.”
As the Tianjin Summit approaches, the SCO is poised to translate its vision into action. Rooted in the “Shanghai Spirit”, the organization aims to connect markets, empower youth, and reinforce stability across its diverse membership. Under the banner of a common home, the SCO offers a blueprint for inclusive growth that resonates with young global citizens, entrepreneurs, and changemakers worldwide.
