In Hubei Province's Yichang City, a 6.5-kilometer canyon rafting route has become the must-try summer adventure in the Chinese mainland’s central region. Since April, the Chaotianhou scenic spot has welcomed over 350,000 visitors — a 30% increase year-on-year — as adrenaline seekers flock to cool off on roaring rapids.
Beyond open-air runs, visitors can explore underground waterways on cave rafting tours. With year-round temperatures hovering in the mid-teens Celsius, these cool tunnels add a multi-sensory twist to the classic river ride.
After dark, the river comes alive with illuminated night rafting, featuring LED-lit channels and ambient soundtracks that transform the water into a glowing playground under the stars.
"It's like getting a two-day, one-night experience. You can try all three types of rafting – you can literally raft from morning till night," said tourist Chen Hongqing, summing up the non-stop thrills.
Tourism officials report that the new rafting programs have extended average stays and increased local spending, injecting fresh energy into the region’s summer travel scene.
